4 Oct A few weeks ago, I reported on the lead-up to this year's Great Salt Lick Contest, a unique sculpture competition that's been held in Baker City, Oregon, since As with many art events, the works in question are made by community members, judged by local luminaries, and auctioned off for charity.

The 11th Annual Great Salt Lick Contest/Auction/Benefit will be held September 16, at Crossroads Art Center, Auburn, Baker City OR. All auction proceeds, will go to OHSU Parkinson's Center of Oregon. Description:Everybody leaves the hall with smiles on their faces, including Beth and Fred Phillips, who raise Angus cattle and entered four salt licks in the contest. There are no numbers of how their grades improved or that they were able to graduate from high school. Too many kids couldn't participate because transportation away from school was too difficult. Crossroads, then a struggling small rural town art center did not have a scholarship fund and the ability to pay for kids to take class. Each child has the opportunity to create at least 5 and most of the time more ornaments to give as gifts or hang on their tree. He says living with the disease has taught him that "you have to follow your folly.
