Spunk play reviews
An author's irrepressible spirit comes through at Court Theatre
22 Jan Orlando Sentinel theater critic Matthew J. Palm reviews "Spunk and the Harlem Literati" from Theatre UCF.
Description:Professor Be Boyd has adapted her play from a s work by Zora Neale Hurston, and she has stocked it with colorful characters, thoughtful commentary and bright performances. Adding to the flavorful concoction: And of course there are the delicious words of Hurston, the iconic author of "Their Eyes Were Watching God" who grew up in Eatonville and highlighted Central Florida's black culture. But at nearly three hours long, "Spunk and the Harlem Literati" is bloated. And the tonal shifts required to accommodate all those theatrical moments can jar. The play needs editing and a general smoothing of the rough edges to let the many successful elements shine cohesively together.
